Double win for ‘The Outlaws’ at the RTS West of England Awards 2023

The series was recognised in the Scripted Production and Director categories at the ceremony on Sunday.

The Royal Television Society West of England Awards took place on Sunday 23 April at Bristol Old Vic with a ceremony hosted by Katherine Kelly and Joe Sims, celebrating the work of the television community of the West of England over the last year.

Stephen Merchant’s comedy thriller The Outlaws won two awards for its second series, in both the Scripted category and the Director category for John Butler. The judges commended the “sharp writing, fantastic performances and the seamless switch from comedy to drama.”

Lynn Barlow, Chair of RTS West of England and Assistant Vice-Chancellor Creative and Cultural Industries Engagement, UWE said, “An amazing range of winners across all genres, proving the West Country's programme makers are at the top of their game."

The RTS is Britain’s leading forum for television and an educational charity. Governed by industry professionals, for the benefit of the industry, it brings people together to exchange ideas, debate and explore key issues. RTS Futures Bristol is a talent initiative, delivering a programme of events aimed at those entering the industry.

The first series of The Outlaws was BBC’s biggest comedy launch of 2021, streaming 11m times on BBC iPlayer, and was renewed for a second series that aired in 2022. The series is a co-production between BBC One and Amazon Studios.
